Everyone desires that fresh, youthful gaze — the kind where the eyelashes flutter like butterfly wings, and there’s a spark of vitality in the eyes! Unfortunately though, the delicate skin around the eyes is the first to show signs of aging: wrinkles appear, the tissue starts to sag, puffiness and bags develop, and excess fat can accumulate. All of this can make a face look much older than it would if not for signs of aging around the eyes.

The good news is that blepharoplasty can restore your youthful gaze. At Seline Aesthetics Medicine Center, our specialists perform this procedure quickly, expertly, and with maximum comfort for the client.


Procedure Description


Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting imperfections of the upper and lower eyelids, eliminate wrinkles, puffiness, and under-eye bags, and even correct the Asian eyelid, literally creating the new shape of the eyes.


There are four main types of blepharoplasty. These include:


  • Upper Blepharoplasty. Upper lid surgery is used to correct sagging skin, wrinkles, and folds on the upper eyelids. The incisions are made along the natural fold of the eyelid, leaving no visible scarring after the procedure;
  • Lower Blepharoplasty. Involves eye bag removal surgery, eliminating wrinkles, folds, and excess fat accumulation. This procedure is performed through an incision along the lower lash line;
  • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty. A minimally invasive method for lower lid surgery: no external eyelid incisions required. Instead, the incisions are made on the inner side of the eyelid, leaving no visible traces;
  • Complex (Circular) Blepharoplasty. This combines both upper and lower eyelid lift in one procedure, addressing aesthetic concerns in multiple areas with a single surgery.

In addition to removing excess tissue around the eyes, redistributing fat to correct deep palpebromalar grooves is performed. This method is known as fat transfer blepharoplasty.


Like any other surgical procedure, blepharoplasty is performed based on specific indications, which can be either aesthetic or medical.


Aesthetic:


  • Tissue drooping;
  • Fine and deep wrinkles around the eyes;
  • Under-eye bags, hernias, or fatty deposits;
  • Asian eyelid;
  • Drooping corners of the eyes;
  • Prominent palpebromalar groove;
  • Asymmetry of the eyes, patient’s desire to change their form or shape.

Medical:


  • Entropion or other pathological conditions;
  • Traumas;
  • Changes in the soft tissues affecting vision.

Benefits of the Procedure


Blepharoplasty is an effective eyelid enhancement solution for addressing both the signs of skin aging, and any structural changes to the eye shape. The key benefits of the procedure include:


  • Low-traumatic nature of the procedure;
  • Long-lasting results: for about 10 years on average;
  • Minimal risk of complications;
  • Expansion of the field of vision;
  • Removal of a "heavy" or fatigued look;
  • Giving youthfulness to the eyes;

Shape and contour correction – for patients with Asian eyelids, the double eyelid operation or ptosis correction can help create a more open, wide-eyed look often seen in European double fold eyelid shapes.


How to Prepare for the Procedure?


Preparation for eyelid tightening begins with personalized recommendations provided by your doctor during the initial consultation. General guidelines should be followed:


  • Diagnosis to identify any potential contraindications;
  • Consultation with an anesthesiologist to determine the most suitable type of anesthesia;
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least two weeks before surgery. Nicotine can impair the healing process, while alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding. It’s also important to refrain from taking vasodilators, such as aspirin, during this period.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Procedure?


Eyelid rejuvenation is an excellent choice for patients who have noticed signs of aging around the eyes or who suffer from congenital or acquired conditions, such as ptosis or changes in the shape and contour of the eyelids. This procedure is ideal for those who want to:


  • Achieve a more "open" look by removing drooping eyelids, under-eye bags, and excess fat;
  • Alter the shape of eyes;
  • Preserve their youthfulness by eliminating wrinkles and folds and correcting the palpebromalar groove.

Contraindications


Blepharoplasty is not suitable for every patient. There are certain conditions and contraindications that may prevent the procedure from being performed, including:


  • Hemophilia;
  • Decompensated diabetes mellitus;
  • Central nervous system disorders;
  • Heart and vascular diseases;
  • Malignant neoplasms;
  • Acute inflammatory conditions;
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Risks


Although blepharoplasty is a widely recognized and well-established procedure, refined over the years to perfection, some risks are still inherent, as with any surgery.


Potential side effects include:


  • Swelling and bruising in the treated area. These are common reactions to surgery, typically resolving on their own without the need for additional treatment;
  • Mild discomfort or pain. While severe pain is unlikely, some discomfort may occur. Pain tends to peak between the 2nd and 4th day post-surgery, then gradually subsides;
  • Dryness and redness of the eye membranes;
  • Temporary blurred vision;
  • Numbness of the eyelids.

Every surgical procedure carries some degree of risk, but there's no need to be overly concerned and abandon your dream. Post-Treatment Care


On average, full recovery after blepharoplasty takes about a month. During the rehabilitation period, it's important to follow these guidelines:


  • Limit eye strain until your sutures are removed. After that, you can gradually resume activities like reading, watching TV, and working on the computer;
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and sports during the recovery period;
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 10-14 days post-surgery (or ideally, for as long as possible). Not drinking will help speed up the healing process. It's also advisable to refrain from smoking;
  • Skip eye makeup for the first few days after surgery. Your doctor will recommend appropriate care products for your skin.
  • Switch from contact lenses to glasses during your recovery period to avoid irritation and promote healing.

By following your doctor's instructions carefully, you will ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.


Stages

During the preparatory stage:


  • A thorough consultation and examination are conducted. Tests are collected to assess your suitability for the procedure and identify any potential contraindications;
  • Detailed evaluation and documentation of the periorbital area and facial features are made;
  • Photographs are taken to document tissue positioning, providing a visual reference for the problem areas.

The main stage involves surgical manipulation itself:


  • Excess tissue is removed;
  • If necessary, tissue is redistributed to address the specific goals of the surgery;
  • Overstretched muscles, hernias, and fatty deposits are removed;
  • Skin tightening;
  • Sutures are applied.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring the patient’s comfort throughout. After being discharged, patients gradually resume their normal routine.
